The overriding theme in most of my work has been the landscape; most specifically the internalized landscape of my youth. I was born and raised in Middle America, coming from a rural farming community that left lasting impressions on my vision.
When I look at "Prairie Schooner" I see elements of the Midwestern landscape; of rolling hills and vistas. I keep returning to pieces, revisiting pivotal points in time and creating a thematic ribbon of landscape and impressions that runs through all of my work. In the "Old Man" I have collected elements including rocks, tree bark and other symbolic objects from the landscape putting them in a chamber that represents the center, the very heart of the figure. There is a rapport, an investigation of materials, consideration of scale and sighting of a piece to consider. And the poetry of the piece; the poetry drives the imagination creating a deeply personal relationship to the work. It all relates.
I believe I am a symbolist returning to the landscape of my youth and building images that reflect my desire to speak poetically of the mystery and beauty of my childhood visions. There is an interconnectivity of vision and reality, nature and life that appears and drives me to continue.
